Something to Ponder
Eugene Luttrell wrote this devotional and wanted to share it! I hope you’re as blessed as I was when I read it. Diana
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. (Revelation 3:20, NIV)
This is a verse I claim every morning as I spend time in prayer. The words are Jesus’ as He gave guidance and direction to one of the seven churches identified in the first few chapters of the book of Revelation. But this promise is for all believers across all time and generations, so I have adopted it into my prayer life and claim it every day. I mean, what can be better than Jesus, the Creator of the cosmos and of every living thing, dining with me? I can’t think of anything more excellent than that! What an incredible opportunity! What value does that place on my life or yours to realize the eternal God wants to partake a meal with us? It says loud and clear, we have “infinite worth and value” in His eyes. I love that so much. Contemplating that can really make your day if you truly believe in the promises of Christ. It helps me to realize the cares and concerns of this world are not as important and worthy of stress and anxiety as I often think they are. Just consider the posture of Jesus from this verse – He is at your door, knocking, asking for entrance into your life as your Savior and Friend. All we have to do is first, “Hear His voice,” and second, “open the door.”
So, a couple of questions we need to consider: #1 – How do we “hear His voice?” I believe it is through spending time in His Word and in prayer. The more we dedicate time to Jesus, the clearer we can hear Him “knocking” and begin to understand His love for us in a much deeper way.
#2 – How do we open the “door” to let Jesus come in and fellowship with us? Opening the door of our hearts is actually quite simple. It is being willing to go, be, and do as He directs in our lives. On the other hand, if I decide I don’t want to follow the path Jesus desires for my life, I am actually closing the door on Him and saying to Him, “I don’t want to have fellowship with you.” Unfortunately, because my heart is naturally rebellious, I have to ask for the strength to be willing to obey His Word. I have to come to Jesus and, almost as it were, cling to Him, because my heart always wants to close the door and deny Him entrance. King David, after he had gone his own way, later realized the great sin he committed, cried out to Jesus in Psalm 51, and said, “create in me a clean heart, Oh God, and renew a right spirit within me.” He lost the fellowship with Christ he once had and desperately desired to gain it back.
Praise God! We have a loving Savior who died for our sins and is willing to take us back and restore the fellowship again. He is always calling us, offering us a relationship with himself that will fulfill our hearts’ desires. Let’s “open the door” for Him to enter today!
Scripture Thought for the Day
James 1:22–25 – But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
